I wish I was beautiful. I wonder what it’s like not to be criticized how I look on the media. I want to be normal. But what even is normal to people today..? Hello teachers and students today i’m going to be talking about nowadays society’s beauty standards and how it affects us. Let me just say there is way too much wrong and I’ll just start it off with a couple facts. Did you know that 81% of 10 year old girls are afraid of being fat and 35% of 6-12 year old girls have been on at least one diet. Also more than half of adult women surveyed claim their bodies “disgust” them and 97% of women admit to having at least 1 “I hate my body” moment each day. All because of the media and their insane standards. Everyone wants to have the perfect body like all the models that you see on social media, ads, or runways. Not realizing that those are unrealistic beauty standards and their bodies are photoshopped. They also don’t realize to be perfect you have to be underweight and unhealthy. 35% of models have an eating disorder because they want to be skinny. If you aren’t anorexic or underweight you are considered obese. Over 1000 adolescent girls surveyed, 88% of them believe that the media puts a lot of pressure on them to be thin. 65% believe that the represented body image in the media is too skinny, and 60% compare themselves to these unrealistic standards. The media can cause body dissatisfaction, low self-esteem, and disordered eating. One of the biggest problems is the lack of diversity in the media. Which idealizes female celebrities that are white, tall, and thin. This is unhealthy for many young girls of different ethnicities because they see a society that does not represent their ethnicity well. The media doesn’t only influence girls, it influences guys as well. 18% of boys are highly concerned about their weight and physique, causing them to feel pressured and driving them into depression, alcohol use, or drug use. 80.7% of guys have complained about a feature of themselves.  23% said concerns about them prevent them from going to the gym. (in other words they would worry what other people think). 63% of guys believe their muscles aren’t large enough, 29% worry about their appearance at least 5 times a day, and 18% feel pressured to go on a high protein diet to increase muscle mass.The media sets these standards  and everyone thinks they have to follow them. To be perfect. To have the perfect life or the perfect body.What Im explaining is that you shouldn’t be worried what the media would think or others because those are unrealistic standards and it doesn’t matter what other people think, everybody has their own unrealistic standard. The only standard that is important is yourself, about yourself. If you think you’re perfect then that’s perfect. Thank you for listening to my speech.
