The book provides new insight into the foundational beliefs and values that make for strong nations and success.
Written in two parts, ” the teacher” which we have a glimpse at the events in Mr Lim Siong Guan work life learning pointers and ” The leader” shared his thoughts on leadership
His journey in the first part of the story as well as key government initiatives that have been introduced.
The second half of the book is devoted to leadership principles and some example he shared throughout his career.
There is also summaries on every alternate page and make reading a book more efficiently.
Although this book covers many topics on leadership, the most important ones is Honesty and integrity, how honesty and integrity can so easily be undermined when people fear to tell the truth.
To be a leader, you must be honest one-hundred percent of the time. And you don’t have to keep track of lies you’ve told.
Honesty will build trust and respect among you, your superiors, and your subordinates. Be honest 100 percent of the time.
As a leader, shows to people that you are honest even when it comes to admitting to a mistake. By demonstrating honesty with yourself, with your organization and with outside organizations, you will build your leadership influence. People will trust someone who displays honesty–not just as an honest person, but as someone who is worth following.
What is integrity ?
“Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching.
I couldnt help but asking myself, how many times i am driving without integrity, using phone during driving when no one is watching and quickly in good and proper when i spotted a police car.
How many times that I didn’t display the parking coupons and hope that I will get away from it and I have to thanks to more and more electronic car park gantry that totally prevent me from doing it again. I behaved one way when ‘someone was watching’, and another way when no one was watching.
No one is perfect, we all make mistakes, but those with integrity admit their mistakes and do what they can to right the wrong.
How can train ours leaders to be high standard of value that our organization desired ?
Reference to Mr Lim book chapter One – walk the ground, be there for the troops and you able to understand, communicate and influence for desired behavior.
Reference to the book Chapter 7, the successful past does not guarantee a successful future if values and lessons did not transmitted from one generation to another. Simply put it in words, learn from the past, adapt to present and anticipate the future.
“Values are the attributes that are fundamental factors essential for the long term success of the company” as quotes from the book.
The leaders of SAF have to see his or her role not just to lead well for today but as well as for the future.
I totally agreed with Mr Lim that the leaders best contribution is as a teacher whose concern is first and foremost the success of his or her people.
